Stepping up monitoring and data processing in Jordan
The “2nd Training on Water Monitoring and Data Processing in Jordan” was held on March 12-15 in Amman in the framework of the WATER SUM/WaterPOrT project, with field exercises taking place near the Dead Sea at Wadi Shueib. The training was focused on building practical experience related to the monitoring of surface and ground waters. The event was organised as a continuation of the 1st Water Monitoring training, held in October 2016.
Covering the main aspects of monitoring surface water and groundwater quality and quantity, the agenda was tailored to build the capacity of water authorities, practitioners and other stakeholders in Jordan.
During the first day of the training, participants practiced taking hydrological measurements in rivers and reservoirs, using equipment kindly provided by the Jordanian Ministry of Waters and Irrigation. Mr. Luis de Celis and Mr. Jesus Pernas demonstrated how to use the equipment. The focus of the second day was on hydraulic data analysis, processing, and reporting for water-management purposes.
The training continued with field exercises on physico-chemical and biological monitoring, and exploring different approaches and indicators to establish the quality of surface waters. The participants practiced field sampling of streams in Wadi Shueib and standing waters at Shueib Dam, guided by Ms. Romina Alvarez. The field monitoring data was used on the fourth training day to demonstrate analysis and reporting on water quality status.
Besides the training topics, the workshop also provided valuable feedback on the needs for further capacity building for experts at Jordanian water institutions. Topics of higher interest for the participants have been identified as follows:
- hydrology, including methods of calculation and interpretation of water discharge data;
- effective water quality monitoring, including biological indicators in combination with standard physico-chemical parameters; and
- remote sensing approaches that are complementary to in situ monitoring.
