The two-day Capacity Building on Water Demand Management (WDM) workshop was held in Cairo on 17-18 January 2018.

The two-day Capacity Building on Water Demand Management (WDM) workshop was held in Cairo on 17-18 January 2018. This workshop targeted policy makers, water authorities, other experts and relevant stakeholders in Egypt.

The objectives of the workshop were:

  • Building capacities of stakeholders on WDM.
  • Introducing basic economic concepts underlying WDM.
  • Enhancing knowledge through practical & interactive sessions and case study examples from the MENA region and beyond.

Participants were very active through the two days, and many of the sessions went overtime due to extensive discussions. The exercises and the presented cases were the most popular, and the presentations also received the attention of participants. The workshop also showed that some WDM initiatives are already taking place in Egypt, e.g. there already is a leakage reduction program and drinking water tariffs were raised substantially last year. The training provided useful knowledge to aid the development of a coherent package of WDM related measures that reinforce each other and lead to a more effective water management in Egypt.
